Elias grew up in extreme poverty, in a home made harder by his father’s alcoholism and physical abuse. As one of the oldest children, Elias bore the worst of it. His family recognized the danger he was in and asked the City of Refuge to take him in for his own safety.

That courageous request changed everything. Today Elias is safe. He has room to be a teenager: he loves playing soccer, and, just as much, he genuinely loves to study. Teachers notice a student like that.

Elias wants to become a soldier when he grows up, a protector rather than someone who needs protecting. Sponsorship surrounds him with the food, schooling, and steady care that let a young man heal and build his future.
