Selvin comes from an extremely poor family, and his young life has carried real loss: his mother died of leukemia. For a boy already growing up with so little, losing her was the hardest blow of all.

The City of Refuge has given Selvin a safe, steady home where he can grieve, heal, and grow. He loves soccer, he loves superheroes, his favorite color is red, and he will always say yes to an apple.

It says something about Selvin that, after everything, his dream is to become a teacher, to stand in front of children and give them what he is receiving now. A sponsor keeps him fed, in school, and moving toward that classroom of his own.
